Is massage therapy a great way to treat yourself? Sure! Sometimes...
If someone you know is going for a massage, isn’t the first response you hear, “Oh! You are so lucky!”. And they are, but not always for the reason you may think.
Lots of people go for a relaxation massage. They might go to a spa or high volume local shop at a plaza to catch a little “me time”. Massage can be fantastic for mentally switching off and recuperating. It can help refill our proverbial bucket after we've spent days, weeks or months pulling from it. EVERYONE needs something to help themselves relax and that could be a walk, meditation, a laugh, massage, a drink or a treat.
What people don't often realise is that remedial massage therapy isn’t always about decompressing. Remedial massage therapists can work very closely with other Allied Health Professionals (Physiotherapists', Chiropractors, Exercise Physiologists, etc) to help patients achieve their physical health care goals.
Below are a few conditions which remedial massage has been shown to be productive in treating:
* physical pain from muscle tension, including back, neck, shoulder, elbow, hip and knee aches and pain
* myofascial pain
* rotator cuff injuries
* frozen shoulders
* tennis or golfers elbow
* carpal tunnel
* muscle sprains and strains
* sports and overuse injuries
* headaches and migraines
* osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
* pregnancy discomfort
* recovering from major surgery
Targeting an injury or working with a condition is not always as soothing as a relaxation massage but it can provide relief and it can help you heal. Occasionally one treatment will resolve the issue at hand, but more often than not your remedial massage therapist will build a treatment plan that could be a couple treatments within a couple weeks, or even a recommendation of a monthly maintenance treatment to keep you in your best condition.
If you have a nagging injury that just won’t quit, seek out a therapist and talk to them about what you could achieve together.
